This ground-breaking new book is the powerboating equivalent to Heavy Weather Sailing – the classic and bestselling reference on the Adlard Coles Nautical list.

Edited by Hugo Montgomery-Swan and endorsed by Bear Grylls, contributors include leading powerboating names, from world champions and endurance record breakers to designers, instructors and RNLI coxwains. Like Heavy Weather Sailing, it includes chapters on the theory of dealing with rough seas and shares the hard-won experience of experts in their field, leaders in their class, or simply ordinary powerboaters who found themselves unexpectedly faced with extreme weather, and survived to pass on the lessons they learned.

Among other topics, Heavy Weather Powerboating looks at offshore adventuring, high-speed helming techniques, operating in the surf and surviving terrifying phenomena such as black holes and rogue waves.

Packed with dramatic colour photos throughout, Heavy Weather Powerboating is the authoritative and ultimate resource for strategies, techniques and experiences in heavy weather.

Hugo Montgomery-Swan is the Editor of RIB Magazine. He has gathered together contributions from an amazing collection of speed and endurance record breakers, RNLI coxwains, powerboat instructors and world powerboating champions for this ground-breaking book. About the Author

Hugo Montgomery-Swan

(Biography)

Born in 1962, Hugo Montgomery-Swan, was born and brought up in Cornwall and now lives near Exeter in Devon. Married to Michaela, he is father to four children. His ancestral line includes the ancient Kings and Princes of Wales and a family tree that can be traced as far back to William the Conqueror and even the Roman Emperor, Caractacus. Hugo’s Father, Hugh Edward, fought in both world wars as a cavalry officer in the British Army and was 70 years of age when Hugo was born! Hugo’s life has been and continues to be, multifaceted. Upon leaving school with little or no academic qualifications, Hugo first showed great promise as a professional showjumper – competing at a high national level for some 4 years level before making the decision that the pursuing of a career with horses was not for him.  At the age of 24, Hugo married Michaela, (then only 17,) and today they own and run Oyster House Media, the largest independent publisher of music magazines in the UK. In addition, Hugo publishes and edits the adventure powerboat magazine, RIB Magazine. Besides his journalism and magazine publishing exploits, Hugo is the show founder and organiser of the RIBEX Powerboat Show, (this year opened by extreme survivalist, Bear Grylls,) as well as the music concert RIBFEST, (this year headlined by folk-rock sensation, Seth Lakeman.) Both events are held in Cowes on the Isle of Wight annually every May. At this present time, Hugo is launching his new book, Heavy Weather Powerboating. (Published by Adlard Coles and endorsed by Bear Grylls, HWPB is a unique collection of personal accounts and experiences from leading experts all around the world on the subject of extreme sea-state survival. The book has been published as the long awaited ‘sister title’ to the yachtsman’s classic, Heavy Weather Sailing.) In addition, Hugo is also busy launching two new music events for 2010 and 2011, namely, the London Drum Show at London Olympia and a major new music show, Seafest, to be held at Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth. Hugo’s professional interests have been born both out his love for the sea and his active involvement in music. His boating accomplishments include, RIB racing accolades and offshore RIB adventuring. The latter includes circumnavigating Britain three times, (one of which, along with his then 12 year old son Thomas, was accomplished in 10 days aboard a tiny 50hp 4-metre RIB -  a true first in boating circles,) plus the circumnavigation of Scotland and its Isles no less than four times. Likewise Hugo has circumnavigated Ireland; the daring account of which was recorded in detail as a chapter within in the current revised edition of, Heavy Weather Sailing, published by Adlard Coles. Hugo is also a working musician and singer/songwriter with his band, Swans In Flight. His current 16 track album features no less than 13 world-class name guest artists/musicians from bands such as, The Billy Idol Band, Whitesnake, Megadeth, Jethro Tull and The Pretenders. The last 18 months has seen the band perform shows at Birmingham NEC, London Earls Court and London Excel, plus several of the UK’s leading festivals. Hugo and his family’s are Jehovah’s Witnesses, and as such, Hugo serves as an elder in his local congregation and as a voluntary team member on the Hospital Liaison Committee of Jehovah’s Witnesses, (an initiative which works closely here in the UK with the NHS to promote the use of Bloodless Medicine.)
