Teenage boy suffers extensive injuries
A teenage boy suffered head injuries and a broken leg when he fell through a gap in a high diving platform off Plymouth Hoe.
The 15-year-old old fell from the 60ft high platform at 2100 BST on Thursday.
He was climbing up with a friend to the diving board when he fell through the gap, coastguards said.
A coastguard rescue boat brought the boy to nearby Millbay, where he was taken by ambulance to hospital. The structure has now been closed.
A spokeswoman for Plymouth City Council said a lockable door on the platform, which dates from the 1930s, was "constantly being broken" by divers.
A ladder had been removed and metal overhangs also put in place to stop people from attempting to climb the structure.
She said: "The guidance is that this platform could only be used if there was some sort of specialised lifeguard cover.
"We had been looking into see if this lifeguard cover is a possibility and recently had an independent life saving expert carrying out a risk assessment on the boards."
